Fall 2025, Somewhere in my memory
Soon after starting a documentary about my grandmother's Iranian piano practice, I was faced with her fragile memory and how I would need to pressure her to remember a reality she no longer lives. Struggling to find the fine line between truth-telling and exploiting my subject for creative purposes, I realized the only truth I could depict is how she lives in my memory, and that's what I did. Influenced by essay film traditions, the work embraces a non-linear, stream-of-consciousness structure to examine the tension between holding onto the past and respecting the present, ultimately positioning the film not as her story, but as my relationship to memory, loss, and love.
If I close my eyes and think of my grandmother, this is what I remember.
